Course Overview

If you are managing a website or want a career in web development you will need to know how to upload files from your local computer to a remote web server. This practical beginners workshop will help you understand file transfer protocol (ftp), software to use and how to upload a website.

This workshop seeks to provide a basic understanding of FTP. It is aimed at complete beginners to and seeks to encourage progression into further study.

Audience: Beginner website owners, Junior web designers, Junior front-end web developers.

What you will learn

The aim of the workshop is to equip you with the knowledge and tools to understand FTP and transfer files for a website to a remote location. It is a practical course with examples, activities and plenty of guidance to help you.

At the end of the workshop, participants will:
  • have a basic understanding of file transfer protocol.
  • have an overview of different FTP software and methods.
  • have a basic understanding of file and folder (CHMOD) permissions.
  • have a basic understanding of how to upload a website using FTP.

Module 1B. Working with FTP

  • Connecting to an FTP server

This module covers some common FTP tools used to connect to a remote server. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.

Module 1C. Files and Folders

  • Organising Directories
  • File Permissions
  • File Transfer

This module covers some uploading and organising files using FTP. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.
