This practical beginners workshop will help you understand what HTML is for, how to use it and how to stay up to date with current HTML coding standards. This workshop forms part of a series which makes up a full course aimed at beginner website development and website management. If you can write a sentence you can learn HTML.

What you will learn

The aim of the workshop is to equip you with the knowledge and tools to understand HTML and how it is used in a basic website. It is a practical course with code examples, coding activities and plenty of guidance to help you.

Module 1A: HTML and the Internet

  • HTML and why it is essential to build websites.
  • How people access the Internet.
  • How the Internet (world wide web) works.

This module briefly covers some essential background information which is needed in order to understand and use HTML effectively. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.

Module 1B:  All about structure

  • Understanding structure.
  • Learning about markup.
  • Basic tags and elements.

This module covers how HTML describes the structure of a web page and introduces basic HTML tags and elements. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.

Module 1C:  Creating a HTML web page

  • Create the layout.
  • Add content and markup
  • Saving the web page.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • have a basic understanding of HTML.
  • have coded a basic HTML web page.
  • focus on building a functional HTML web page.

This module covers creating a web page and using HTML tags and elements to organise the layout. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.
