Course objectives

If you are managing a website or want a career in web development you will come across CSS pretty quickly. This practical beginners workshop will help you understand what CSS is for, how to use it and how to stay up to date with current CSS coding standards.

Audience: Beginner website owners, Junior web designers, Junior front-end web developers.

Duration: 1 x Day (6 hours)

What you will learn

The aim of the workshop is to equip you with the knowledge and tools to understand CSS and how it is used in a basic website. It is a practical course with code examples, coding activities and plenty of guidance to help you.

Module 1A. CSS Basics

CSS is used for controlling how a web page looks from a design perspective and the code can the used repeatedly across the website. As such it can provide powerful control over the presentation of web pages and entire websites. This workshop introduces the concepts of CSS and how to get started using it.

Module 1B. Cascading Style Sheets

Learn about external style sheets and how to use them on multiple web pages. Understand basic CSS syntax and how to use single style sheets and multiple style sheets. This module is all about understanding the difference between CSS embedded in a single web page and using style sheets on multiple web pages.

Module 1C. Styling text with CSS

Understand font-related properties and how font resources are loaded. Define the style of a font including the font family, size and weight, line height and color. Learn how to change the font style and color for a hyperlink.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • have a basic understanding of CSS
  • have coded a handful of useful CSS examples
  • focus on building a functional HTML & CSS web page

This module covers styling a web page and using CSS to organise the presentation. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.
